I think she's one of the most interesting characters in Greek tragedies, and it sounds nice. The meaning "compared to birth" doesn't bother me. I think it's fun to see anti(ante)-gone in it, too, like "before loss" as a fabricated meaning rounds it out somehow.
I think it could work as a name in the US but would just be regarded as a pleasant curiosity when people encountered it, rather than something fashionable. Americans don't know the story, and it looks like a brand of pest repellent, regardless of how it's actually pronounced. I guess if there was a character named
Antigone in a huge franchise, it'd get about as much use as
Hermione's getting.
