At the age of 36, Minerva gives birth to another daughter, a curious child, more well-behaved than her older sister.
Having read of the Wright brothers' astonishing feat at the age of 12, Edwin decided that his destiny was to become a pilot. Peregrine and Minerva prefer their feet firmly on the ground, and think their son's fascination a childish fancy, but Beatrice insists that when he becomes a pilot, he must fly her around the entire world.
When organising tea parties for the teddy bears she shares with Clement ends in (imaginary) bloodshed, she enjoys pretending to patch them up, and has resolved to become a nurse one day. Minerva hired a music master to teach her children the piano - Edwin is hopeless, Beatrice middling, and Clement exceptionally talented, performing in the town hall aged only 8.
