I've met two Gingers (in the US), very different but both pleasant caring people. One is currently my boss; she goes by Doctor Ginger at work. I'm pretty sure it's their full/official name for both of them.
I feel like mostly it reminds me of Ginny, except it's got more of an offbeat retro or nature vibe like Saffron or Roxy. It's also wordy and has the popular sounding *er like Piper, Harper, Summer, Winter, etc. I think of the word gingerly more than I think of it as a hair color.
