I only know of it because of the actress Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars). Given that it's so unusual, I don't have a problem with it being used for one gender or another. For what it's worth, Wolfram Alpha says it's a female given name, is estimated to belong to 28 people total in the U.S., and the most common age of a person named Troian is 3.
