Most of these were before my time as well, though I think I'm older than you (Hurricane Andrew happened when I was an infant). I'll never forget Katrina and Rita back-to-back, hammering the Gulf of Mexico the way they did - nor the political maelstrom that followed (I was a freshman in high school, just starting to become more "aware" and not take what I was told at face value).
It's a shame how stigmatized the name Katrina was for a long time, because I've always liked the name. It might not be as taboo anymore, though. Although I checked the popularity stats and the drop-off is a bit
less steep than I'd thought it would be; but it still fell out of the Top 1000 a decade ago.
