You, of all people, know what you're doing! But for the rest of us, why are Lucas, Luca and Luke not combined? Are they perhaps used by very different groups of people, or in very different places? Enquiring minds would love to know! And, thank you for all your hard work: so useful and interesting.

My list is supposed to be putting together spellings that can be pronounced exactly the same. So these three names, though obviously variations of each other, don't fit that criteria because they have different endings. Similarly, I would never combine Isabella and Isabel or Sophia and Sophie on my lists. Now in France, Lucas and Luca should be counted together, because the final "s" in Lucas is not pronounced in French. :)

Right! That does make sense - thank you. You'd have added complications in South Africa, where Jacob can be used in both English and Afrikaans, though Afrikaans tends to prefer Jakob. But ... JAYcob in English, YAHkob in Afrikaans, and even the o is different. Same with Deborah: in English it would sound like Debra, but in Afrikaans it would look like Deborah but sound like deBOOEra. Which just adds to the fun, really.
