Message: "Sylvia" - Behind the Name

I now know two young girls named Sylvia. I've always loved the name, but it didn't 'fit us.' Like Cecily it has a very formal feeling, almost 'upper-class' feel to it and that's not us. Nothing wrong with it, it's not snobby - just very elegant. I think it's because of the people I've come across with the name. I know people get a similar vibe with Miriam, but the Miriams I've known are very down to earth.

Thoughts?

One of the Sylvias has two brothers - Tristan and Luke. I like Sylvia and Tristan together, Luke sticks out a bit.

I love Sylvia but prefer Silvia. It'll definitely continue to rise in popularity here in the U.S.

I also love Silvina, Sylvestra, and Silvana.

It feels attractive and quite fresh - even though most Polish women named Sylwia are in their forties. I think it's Sylvia's time to shine. I agree - Sylvia, Tristan, and Luke is incongruous.

Yes, I find Sylvia pretty but quite uptight and formal. I prefer Sylvie or Sylvana.

Well, my grandma was Sylvia, and she grew up in a town of 500 in the middle of Kansas. So, it doesn't really have the same upper-class feel to me, I think of her.

I like it.

The only Sylvia I've met was an older lady who owned a quilt shop in Minnesota. I agree it's got a classic type of elegance but think it's more laid-back or softer seeming than most names in the same category. I think it has a keen/intellectual/intuitive/mature quality kind of like Marjorie and Sabina do to me. And Sylvie has a bit of a folksy vibe to me considering "Bring Me A Little Water, Silvy" is a famous folk song...plus I associate forests.

Sylvia feels too dusty to me. Sylvie feels more fresh and vibrant (to the non-french at least. Sylvia still needs to sit on the shelf a bit, but I'm 100% on board with Sylvie's time to shine.

My viewpoint may be slightly biased as I have a 5 year old niece named this, although I have always found it to be very gorgeous and classic. Starting kindergarten in September, it's likely that she won't share the same name with a number of other classmates, unlike the higher likelihood of Olivia.
I agree, Luke does stick out a bit in the set, but not terribly.

Yay! Glad to hear there are more little Sylvias being born. I've always loved it, and Cecily. Tristan, Luke and Miriam are great too. I'm a very snobby person so they are sound fine to me. :0)
