Hey, that’s my nickname! My nickname is Will, short for William; I’ve always gone by it over William. I’ve never cared for Bill as a nickname for William, because I feel it doesn’t fit me. I think that Will is an awesome name as a standalone or as a nickname for William. My only complaints are that it can make a joke with my last name, and that it gets confused with the word “will”. Though, you can make annoying jokes with it, too!
Person: “I will do that”Me: “Hi, I Will Lastname!”

I actively dislike Liam. Bill and Billy were used in my family as nns for William; I prefer Bill. I also prefer Will to Bill, but it might be getting a bit tired by now; I'm not sure. I'd have used Will as a nn if I'd named a son William.

I think Will is nice but Bill is... dumpy? frumpy? stale? Like, Will could be anyone, and it sounds fresh and hopeful. Bill is a very specific type of guy, and he's a very specific age, and he's kinda just an average joe but in a slightly creepy way.
Baby boomers are allowed to be called Bill, even though it still has that stale, awkward, unfashionable, scruffy feeling. But someone from any other age group being called Bill feels wrong on top of being outdated.
The good versions of this style are Mike, Scott, Joe, maybe even Jim. Bill and Frank are the gross versions IMO.
ETA: I know Liam is overused but I'm not sick of it yet, it feels fresh like Will to me.

I like both far better than whiny Liam. Will is more youthful and stylish. Bill has always seemed to me like a name that young boys grew into after being called Billy or something else when they were little.
