Included a photo because doesn't she look cool?
Zofia Stryjeńska (née Lubańska, 1891-1976) was an
Art Deco painter. She and
Tamara de Lempicka, whom you'll recognise from my last game, were the most famous female artists of the interregnum in Poland. As the Munich Academy of Fine Arts did not accept women, she disguised herself as a man in order to join. A year into her studies, her classmates discovered her gender, so she returned to her native Kraków, where she joined the intelligentsia and became friends with the literary critic and translator
Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński and the sisters
Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska (the poet) and
Magdalena Samozwaniec (the playwright) - daughters of
Wojciech Kossak, whom you'll also recognise from the previous game. She is best known for her paintings, mostly depicting scenes from history or Slavic folklore, but she also designed the interiors of two ocean liners and the famous E. Wedel Café in Warsaw, and was commissioned by the Japanese Emperor
Hirohito to weave a carpet. In 1945 she moved to
Geneva, where she spent the rest of her life living on a shoestring, refusing financial help from her family. Although she was a Catholic (or occasionally an Evangelical - but only twice, and both times only long enough to get a divorce), her fascination with Slavic paganism - and its prominence in her artwork - inspired the birth of the Slavic Native
Faith, a modern pagan religion.
