Photograph of Mela Muter
Mela Muter (1876-1967) was the artistic pseudonym of Maria Melania Muterlich, a modernist painter born in a wealthy Jewish family of the intelligentsia. The house of her father - a merchant known for his philanthropy towards the poor inhabitants of Warsaw - was frequented by famous writers Leopold Staff and Władysław Reymont, the latter of whom would go on to win the Nobel prize in literature. As an adult, Muter converted to Catholicism and moved to Paris, but fled in 1940 to avoid the persecution of Vichy France, a puppet state of Nazi Germany. Her paintings were inspired by Cézanne and Gauguin.
