[Opinions] Gordon
Today I received news that an old family friend named Gordon had recently passed away. Although I hadn't seen him for years and wasn't necessarily close to him, the name has certainly been on my mind. But, what are your general thoughts on it? Also, what do you think about Gordy/Gordie? I don't personally care for it, and this Gordon I knew hardly ever went by it."Has the planet gone mad? My brother... passion's hostage. I seek justice! Denied. I shall not submit! I shall conquer! I shall rise! My name is Gomez Addams, and I have seen evil! I have seen horror!"

My condolences! I like the name Gordon in the same way I like most names that have strong "Grandpa" energy, like Clifford, Walter, Roger, etc. It's got a satisfying warmth and gravitas. I hadn't really thought about it before, but Rox's comment about the Canadian-ness of Gordon has me realizing it IS kind of a familiar staple name here, with an attached feeling of Golden Age nostalgia. There's Gordon Lightfoot, Gordie Howe, Gord Downie, Gordon Sinclair ... I guess that's why.Gordon is sweet in a gruff teddy bear kind of way. Gordie is ok but it seems less friendly than Gord, somehow.

I would never use Gordon, but I have a slight soft spot for it because of the human character Gordon on Sesame Street.
I don't know any Gordons personally, and strangely, nearly all the real Gordons I know about and nearly all the ones in fiction are Canadian. Is Gordon a very popular name in Canada?Don't like Gordy. It makes me think of someone who is like a gourd.

Gordon is a Scottish ln, and there were a lot of Scottish immigrants to Canada at one stage. Perhaps that's why. Fwiw, my friend says that her ln, Gordon, belonged to a Scot who joined Napoleon's army (poverty at home, pre-Industrial Revolution?) and stayed behind rather than retreat from Moscow. Married a Russian Jew, and the rest is history.

I was trying to think about it, and I guess Gordon is a popular name in Canada, but only for people of certain generations. We have some famous Gordons who are considered cultural legends, and I know of a few Gordons.... but still, nobody under age 50.

Sorry for your loss, regardless of the distance.
As for the name, it has a very good look and sound (it reminds me of Commissioner Gordon from Batman comics, which I actually quite like) but it does seem like it’s a better standalone, Gordie/Gordo/Gor(?) aren’t particularly great nns 😅luckily it’s short enough that it doesn’t really need one

Well, I'm sorry about your friend, anyway. The name by itself is regal and handsome, think dark-grey Scottish vibes. But there are no good nicknames for it!

Thanks. I agree with you on the nicknames. Gordy is about the only obvious one, but as mentioned, don't care for it.
