A Norman origin is consistently mentioned in credible sources. The most credible theories would be:
1. From the Norman interjection 'bî got' ("by God"), used as a pejorative nickname for the Normans;
2. From Old French 'bigot' meaning "beggar".
Personally, I find the former more credible, but I am not an expert.
