Not sure what that extra r is doing there. Perhaps to prevent people from spelling the standard nickname, Terry, as Tery. Which is unlikely.
That said, I quite like Terence. Terry is a pleasant nn, and I'd like to meet a young one. I don't think it was ever very popular, so it probably won't seem dated; just unfamiliar.
