Ancestry.com says it’s German. “perhaps from a female personal name derived from the ancient Germanic name Machthild composed of the elements macht ‘strength might’ + hild ‘strife battle’.” Not too sure of the validity of Ancestry.com, I never looked much into it, but that’s what I found.
