It is the autumn of 1935.
The weight of years bears heavily on
Arthur's once-formidable frame. His mind is still sharp, but his body is frail. A stroke in 1933 has left him partially paralysed. Despite this, he remains mentally engaged, keeping up with world affairs as
Europe teeters on the brink of war. His relationship with his granddaughter
Elfrida, has deepened, and she spends most of her time at Bath, providing
Arthur with much-needed companionship.
Art remarried in 1926, to the daughter of a conservative politician. It is a stable, companiable relationship which has cut through
Art's loneliness, and the Sussex estate is once more home to polite conversation. The couple welcomed a son, who is now three years old. His birth was a wake-up call that made
Art realise he has been neglectful of his children from his first marriage. Thus, he has endeavoured to become closer to them.
He has found success with
Constantine, who is now studying law at Oxford -
Art is relieved he has no ambitions of joining the army. His relationship with
Rosalie, however, remains strained: she has grown into an independent and confident girl who spends most of her time in
London, with her mother, and dreams of becoming an actress - a profession
Art considers disreputable. He fears
Rosalie will end up like his sister
Lavinia.
Despite her husband's imprisonment and the scrutiny it brought her,
Gwen has remained politically active.
Sigmund returned from prison a shell of his former self, and it was clear their marriage was over. They divorced quietly in 1932, and
Sigmund has moved into a miniscule flat in
London, where, despite the traumas of prison, he continues to write for left-wing magazines. Him and
Gwen remain friends, of a kind. When she married
Vincent, her lover, in a quiet, intimate ceremony, he attended, and was very surprised, but touched when
Gwen and
Vincent decided to name their son after him.
Elfrida, however, wants nothing to do with her stepfather or half-brother, and resents her parents, instead drawing closer to her grandfather.
Sam and
Hamish remain in
Paris, where
Hamish has published his third book: this time, on Arthuriana. While they remain prominent figures of the Bohemian expatriate community, the rise of fascism in
Europe worries them increasingly. There is tension between them, as
Hamish has suggested they move back to England.
Sam, however, feels there is nothing left for him in his home country. Thus, for now, they remain in
Paris, even as bricks get thrown through the windows of the saloons and cafés they frequent.
In 1932,
Valentine's illness reached a crescendo, and he attempted to burn the cottage in Surrey down in order to exorcise the poems he wrote there. He was recovered, badly burnt, by a traumatised
Peregrine, who, at 16, has become head of the household.
Valentine was insitutionalised, and
Evie,
Peregrine, and
Evanthe have moved into a small house in Kensington.
Peregrine resents both his parents for letting things go this far, and has grown increasingly protective of
Evanthe. His younger sister has inherited her mother's artistic talent, but, blissfully, her works are much more cheerful. At 10 years old, she mostly paints cats, which she adores.
Leo has grown maddeningly restless with his work in the civil service, and greatly regrets having left the military. In an attempt to inject some excitement into his life, he has started an affair with his secretary - a bright, ambitious, and energetic woman who seems so different from the calm, quiet
Alice.
Leo thinks he is being remarkably discreet, however,
Alice suspects something is amiss.
Atticus has noticed the tension between his parents, and has become shy and withdrawn.
Much to everyone's surprise,
Lavinia and
Ignatz are still married. The rise of fascism in
Europe has emboldened
Ignatz, who has become a prominent member of the newly formed British Union of Fascists, and a close personal friend of
Oswald Mosley.
Lavinia seems not to care terribly much. She remains enamoured with her husband, though their relationship is marred by frequent emotional outbursts on both sides, even as they have welcomed another child: a son, this time, much to
Ignatz's delight.
Hector and
Emilie remain, on the surface, a happy couple.
Hector has taken over management of the Bath townhouse from his father, continues to visit and get along well with his brother
Leo, and him and
Emilie have welcomed a daughter whom
Emilie dotes on and
Rex gets along with splendidly. However, his feelings towards
Alice, his sister-in-law, have grown stronger, and while nothing untoward has happened yet, who is to say what
Alice would do if she found out about her husband's infidelity...
