The Roaring Twenties went out with a crash.

Hugh was trying to rebuild the Granville family fortunes by investing in the market. He took a major hit when the market crashed in October 1929. He and Charity had a new baby and all of sudden lost a good deal of money. Hugh was frantic, ready to sell everything including the horses! Alida ran to the stables and barricaded herself in. Hugh's broker did sell off some of his shares and he kept money in the bank, but things are tight. They had to lay off some servants and sell some paintings. Hugh is counting on marrying off his children in a few years. Mabel is desperate to have Alida come live with her. John is untouchable as the heir to the earldom, and currently at Cambridge. Alida is a daughter therefore more vulnerable to Hugh's machinations. Alida doesn't care as long as she can be near her horses.
Mabel's family also lost some money, although her parents are doing better than Hugh or Paul. Paul is depressed his books aren't selling, even if they are acclaimed and he has taken to drink. Mabel tries to be good to him and a good mother to their daughter. Paul is often gone, but when he is home, he dotes on his daughter whom he calls "Henry".

Roy's mother died, and his father moved in with Roy's younger sister, but Roy's brother-in-law is out of work and Roy is giving them some money.
Ennis is still training pilots. He is trained as a private plane license, but also got his commercial licenses so he can teach different types of pilots (private and commercial). He trained Sylvester to be a private pilot, so Sly can help teach. Their school is booming.

Laurie and Helen are still engaged. Her family still has reservations about him, but many of them think that if they're still together, they should get married. In the beginning, Helen was a party girl who went to clubs and speakeasys and she was only going along with the engagement. Now she wants to get married, but Laurie is starting to have second thoughts. Helen and Hestia are good friends, because they are both independent albeit in different ways.
George is still working at the chocolate factory and feels lucky to have a job. Many of his and Alice's nephews are out of work. He is encouraging his children to stay in their Pennsylvania town, which is booming. For example, there is a new country club in town. Julia is working as a server in the country club clubhouse and Sydney is working part-time as a golf caddy. The family got a kitten, particularly for Pearl, but also as a pet for everyone. Pearl is a little spoiled, but good-natured. Julia and Sydney are saving their money, but spend their pennies on the relatively new chocolate-peanut butter candies that are being made in town and starting to become a favorite.
