The year is 1989.
[I think I lost count of the family's ages, so i revised them.]
last year, Florence's mother, known around the Upper East Side as Granny Cuypers, died with a smile on her face. Surrounded by her only daughter, her son-in-law, and all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was buried next to her beloved Emil.
As sad as her passing was, there was an upside: She left behind montary assets, apartments and shares in different businesses, which were divided by Florence among her children. In the meantime, Florence and Jesse downsized from their townhome into a small loft, renting out their old family home where they used to raise their now-adult offspring. Florence is already gearing for retirement, taking less cases, more of them being pro bono.
Rooster and Teresa had two more children. In addition to his day job, Rooster started working as a conductor in a local philharmonic orchestra. Teresa kept moving up the ranks of the Bank of America, being the main provider as Rooster delved deeper into his artistic passions. Their oldest daughter, Jacqueline, already started playing the silver flute.
Daphne and Clinton are now high-ranking naval officers. They've had 3 more kids, raising them with a strong connection to New York City, despite all of them being Jersey-born. While they enjoy their army positions well enough, Clinton wants to retire into civilian life soon, and open his own business enterprise.
Lydia became an experienced jeweler and saleswoman ib the diamond district, renting out a small condo next to her job. 3 years ago, her boss, a cynical, divorced jewish woman, took her on a business trip to Montana, to acquire sapphires for their jewelry. on their second night in Billings, she took Lydia on a nightly trip to the Crow Indian Reservation's casino. While her boss was wasting her money away at the slot machines, Lydia went to the bar alone, downing Tequila by herself when a shy Crow Nation man approached her. He introduced himself, telling her about his degree in water engineering, his tribal background and his job on the reservation. They exchanged details, and met each other every night of Lydia's business trip, with her nosey boss setting them up on dates when she found out. Soon enough, the boy made the brash decision to leave his reserve and move to New York, to be close to his new love. Jesse sees a lot of similarities between himself and Lydia's boyfriend, coming from somewhat similar rural backgrounds.
Emil decided to stay in Atlanta after finishing highschool, becoming an air conditioning technician, and marrying his highschool sweetheart, a young black woman from Savannah, Georgia, at the ripe old age of 21. Jesse is overjoyed that one of his children chose to return to his deep south roots. Emil was fine with renting out an apartment in Atlanta, but his grandmother was adamant that he own his home, and bought him and his wife a small home in the suburb of Riverdale, where they raise their two kids.
