DH is the eldest of four children, born in New York to Neapolitan parents. His father trained as a chef in Italy while his mother was a piano teacher, and upon their arrival in America, they combined their skills to build a family bar and restaurant from the ground up. DH has worked alongside them since he could form memories and is first in line to inherit the small kingdom. As a child he was fascinated by ocean creatures and idly dreamed of working with them as a marine biologist, conservationist or even just as an aquarium employee, but as the eldest his duty has always been to the business and his family, and his father made no secret of his intention to make DH follow in his footsteps.

DW is an only child, born in Avignon to a French man and American woman, and lived in France until the age of eight when they separated. She had no further contact with her father, despite their closeness, and spent the rest of her childhood in Florida where her mother worked as a nurse, leaving her little time and attention for her daughter. DW spent large periods of time alone in her grandparents’ home, amusing herself with books. Upon reaching early adulthood, she decided that her rural home was too small for her and moved to New York in search of big city hustle and bustle. She now works in a bridal boutique and enjoys the chance to meet so many people on a daily basis, and in her free time is working on a novel.

DH and DW first set eyes on each other two years ago, when DW wandered into DH’s family bar for a drink and a night of music. She was enthralled by the Neapolitan songs, almost equally as charmed by the handsome tattooed bartender, and spent several weeks lingering over a drink, making small talk and ‘accidentally’ forgetting her jacket before finally taking the plunge and suggesting DH accompany her to the cinema. He happily agreed, though it was halfway through the film before he realised this was meant to be a date (DW holding his hand provided a large clue) and hurried to compensate by suggesting a meal to close the night. This turned out to be burgers from a van whilst sitting on a cold wall, but judging by DW’s smiles, the low standard of service didn’t bother her at all.

Since their wedding six months ago, the couple have lived above the bar with DH’s parents and three younger siblings. As much as DW enjoys being surrounded by a large, warm family, she is rather keen to start her own and the apartment is too cramped for that. The couple have agreed to stay for another six months to save money, and then embark on the next step of their journey.
