Alex and Suzanne have found themselves at the head of a large family and of two separate businesses. Alex’s parents are releasing their grip on the reins and moving into more of a mentoring capacity, working in the background to assist him, but otherwise leaving the day-to-day running of the business to their son. His sister is now in charge of the books and his younger brother is running the kitchen, both of them as his employees. (The youngest son has left the family business to pursue law, something his father is disappointed about.) Alex is thriving in his new role, glad to no longer be subject to his father’s orders and to be in a position to provide for his whole family.
Suzanne continues to run her boutique business around her family, although it is certainly the least fulfilling part of her busy life. She has revisited some of the writing she did in her younger years and is considering whether to send some to a publisher, though she is afraid of being rejected and having a lifelong dream crushed. She recognises the same fear of the unknown in her eldest daughter and is quietly worried that Antonia may one day feel trapped. Whenever she encourages her to search for fulfilment outside the confines of the restaurant, thought, the answer is always that she is perfectly happy to follow in her father’s footsteps and allow her siblings the freedom to pursue other things, not least because the only escape she wants is an escape from the classroom.
Antonia is now a teenager and thus spends increasing amounts of time outside the family home. Her interest in academics continues to wane and she continues to dance as a hobby, mostly when she is supposed to be helping her uncle in the restaurant and finds a few moments to herself. Her great passion is music, particularly in foreign languages, and she has travelled out of New York to attend concerts several times – including on weekdays. Suzanne has accompanied her only once, and found the hours of queueing and standing so difficult that she has never gone again.
In contrast to his sister, Nico is a conscientious student and regards himself as an amateur scientist, which really means he wants to wear a white coat and safety goggles whilst conducting experiments in various disciplines. His interests range from space to sharks, although he has recently decided to become a meteorologist as it seems to involve simply standing in front of a TV camera and reading a teleprompter, which seems a simple branch of science. He would also like to find a cure for diseases, but is disgusted by body fluids, which may stifle his ambitions.
On Rosalie’s eighth birthday, she received two important gifts – a Polaroid camera and a book of wildlife photos. Her passion for photography has now exploded and she records all kinds of family moments, whilst taking inspiration from the book and her father to nurture her new dream of travelling the world to photograph animals close up. To this end, Alex often takes her on trips to the aquarium so she can see the marine mammals, although Rosalie instead has ambitions of photographing an elephant’s toenails or a grizzly bear’s teeth.
Now 5 years old, Claude is a quiet, mathematically inclined boy who loves jigsaw puzzles and is very close to his older sister Rosalie, adoringly follows her wherever she goes. He is also proving to be very imaginative, fascinated by films and play-pretend, and frequently creates stories in his head or adapts games with his own preferred rules. Due to his sweet nature, his older siblings all dote on him and make time to play with him when they can.
The family once again expanded two years ago with the arrival of an unexpected third daughter, who stole her aunt’s thunder by deciding to arrive on the day before Alex’s sister’s wedding. Even more unfortunately, the family had travelled to Italy for the occasion and so DD made her entrance on board a slow-moving train en-route to the venue. The distressing experience for all ensured that she would certainly be the last Nervetti child. She spends most of her time with her mother who dotes on her, particularly due to the circumstances of her difficult arrival.

DD’s name honours a 20th century marine biologist or oceanographer. Her middle name was chosen by her aunt, who selected an Italian name meaning happiness.
