I think Vernon was shunned for a long time because of the association with Vernon Dursley, Harry's abusive uncle from Harry Potter. There really weren't any other Vernons most young people recognized besides him. Vernon isn't used as a name where I live, so for me the association was even more blatant - I wasn't into Harry Potter, but my older brother was.
