[Opinions] Why Collins for a girl?
Replies
Collin or Colin is fine for a boy. I don’t care for Collins as a boy and I hate it for a girl. Changing the spelling Kollins doesn’t make it any better. I used to hate Carter for a girl but Collins is much worse. Just use Colleen or Colette if you want a girls name similar to Collin.

I don't know, I despise it. If I had to guess? Parents think it's cool, unique, different, and tomboyish. I think it's awful.
Ugh. I managed to not know this until now.
Honestly, I don't know why this is a thing? I find it genuinely ugly AA a first name for a girl. And the Suzanne Collins association strains credulity - the rise seems to have happened well after the pinnacle of Hunger Games fandom.
The durability of surnames as first names has lasted longer than I once expected, even if some of the surname-names of yesteryear now read as incredibly dated (Ashley, Madison, etc.) I hope this name's trendiness is short.

Surnames are having a LONG moment. I think it's connected to The Blind Side as that's when I saw people start talking about it.
I suspect that the closeness to Colin is the reason it ends up used on girls.

What is the Blind Side? I've never heard of it?
Oscar Winning film from 2009 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blind_Side_(film)
Has a lot of controversy now for the "white savior" narrative and the fact the white people in the film have been revealed to have mistreated and abused Michael Oher, making the film even more offensive now. Do not recommend seeing it.

Yeah, I missed the original hype and only watched it for the first time a couple years ago, and yikes. I can NOT believe Sandra Bullock was even nominated for an Academy Award for that junk, never mind WON. She's not a bad actress, but that movie was seriously garbage. I think the Academy loses its mind a bit whenever something is "based on a true story".
200% Even at the time there was some pushback against its nominations and whether they were deserved... I love Sandra Bullock but that role had me thinking "oof". Oof oof oof.
Luckily she's rebuilding goodwill with Practical Magic 2 lol

Wow...had no clue this movie was so hated. It's a favorite of my family and myself. If you haven't watched it you definitely should.
Coffee lover! Your one of the most positive people on here! Thanks for not always being negative about everything.
According to the database, it first came to people's attention as a girl name when a character was named this in the movie The Blind Side. Interestingly, the actress who played Collins was named Lily Collins.
The film was set in in Tennessee, and the South actually has a long history of using family surnames as first names for girls. So it's not as new of a name as non-Southerners might think.
I'd be interested to see which areas of the US use this name - maybe it's still favoured in the South.

I'm in the south carolina, and most little kids I meet are named normal names like Charlotte, Eliza, and James. In fact, some parents are actually giving their kids outdated gen x and boomer names here, such as Martha, Marilyn, Jennifer and even Tracy! So weird surname names such as Collins and Remington must be exclusive the deep south.

Yep, I'm in the south, and you are exactly right. I even know a little girl named Collyns.
