Girls get names which are linked to their fathers all the time so I don't think it would be "cringey" at all to link a son's name with the mother's.
In a genealogy for families with my mother's maiden name (not all necessarily related to one another) a ran across the example of a mother named Darlene who had a son named Darl, which I thought was a great choice.
