Oka-a-ay, here goes!11 year olds:
Annabelle – greatly prefer Annabel; don’t like false etymologies
Billie – full name, nickname, or don’t you know? I’d expect Billy as a male name, but I wouldn’t expect any version as a female name
Cianna – awful! Like a book for three-year-olds: See Anna jump! See Anna run!
Evie – OK as a nn for Eve, Eva or Evelyn; not OK as a name in its own right
Hattie – pretty much the same: I love Harriet too much to Hattiefy it
Maddie – and the next! I hope for her sake she’s Madeline
Madli – and the same goes for this one
Mia – and again: I hope she’s “really” Maria
Mikayla – bad spelling, not a bad name
Nevaeh – so bad, it’s funny. Looks bizarre, and who wants Heaven to be backward?
Sammie – hoo-boy. Samantha, I hope; not a name I enjoy, but better by far than Sammie
Siena – pretty colour; probably a nice city; not good for human use
Sienna – as above
Stella – at last: calm, classic and beautiful!
Tiara – better than Coronet, but not good at all
Violet – all right I suppose; not my choice, but OK
12 year olds:
Abbey – I do hope it’s a form of Abigail and not a previous home for monks and/or nuns. I dislike Abigail, but rather that than a building
Allegra – used in Afrikaans, funnily enough; not my style
Chloe – happy, pretty, classic; deservedly popular, but I hope it won’t become too popular and then vanish from use
Emily – in spite of its popularity, still one of my favourites
Emma – is it coming or going? Not a favourite, and I don’t understand its popularity
Evie x2 – see above
Georgia – too geographical; much prefer Georgina; suppose it’s OK
Jayla – as in, the person with keys to the prison? What a silly, silly name
Juliette – why bother with the fancypants spelling when it will no doubt be pronounced like the English Juliet, which is far preferable
Layla – slight improvement on Jayla, but not an attractive sound
Matilda – hooray – Australia’s finest, waltzing into prominence! I love Tilly as a nn
Olivia – deservedly popular, provided it doesn’t shrink into Ollie
Tina – I do prefer the full name, whatever it might have been: Catherina, Christina, Martina or whatever, but it’s a good escape from Cathy/Kate, Chrissie, Martie …
