For what it's worth, the novel duology was substantially more enjoyable than the film version. The film was fine, but I was disappointed - the tonal shifts didn't really work for me whereas they did in novel form. (Also the movie needed more Toni Collette.)
I like: Kenneth, Matthew, Alan
Others like Dorothy and Preston are fine to me, in the right context.
The others I don't love much. But they worked in the novel context.
