[Opinions] Ella & Ellen
Its interesting to me how differently I feel about Ella and Ellen.
Ella seems young and interesting.
Ellen seems old and boring.
Is there really that much of a difference between the two? Will Ella sound like Ellen to me in 25 years? Will Ellen become interesting 25 years from now? Or are they both boring to begin with?

I like both (Ella more so), but I do feel Ella will once again seem tired one day (the way it did when I was a child when my great-aunt, Ella May, was alive). One of our neighbors has a grandchild named Ellen and she really is a gorgeous child. It's quite refreshing to see a young Ellen these days.
Another thing to consider is that Ella is so similar to the word elephant. I've heard of one plump little Ella being called "Ella the Elephant." Mean, I know, but kids can be mean.

I feel very differently about the two. They just have such different feels.
Ella is a very (imo) flimsy trend, that will die down rather quickly. It really seems like it's filled with air for me- pretty, but not substantial enough. I'm not a fan of Ella, overall.
Ellen is not old and boring. It has the same pretty feel of Ella, but much more strong and original. I can see it on many different ages and personalities of woemen and girls, and I can't really see it going MAJORLY trendy anytime soon, so i like it very much.

Of the two, Ellen sounds far more interesting to me. Perhaps because I've yet to meet a little girl named Ella, whereas I went to school with two girls named Ellen and know another in middle school--so my positive associations with Ellen are more concrete. Ella's one of those names where I know it's out there and overused like no other (save Grace, ha), while Ellen remains hip, grounded, and a bit counter-culture to me; Ellen's just hanging out, being cool for the people who want it to be--it doesn't care whether or not it's revived any time soon, because it's confident in its cool factor. I can see a young Ellen with hair dyed unnatural colours and a strong sense of independence; I don't feel that so much with Ella.
I really am sorry that Ella's so common, myself; I love Ella Fitzgerald enough that if it wasn't, I'd use it in her honour. However, knowing that there're so many little yuppie kids whining for ice cream while wearing names like Ella Marie kills any love I might have for it.

I don't think that Ellen sounds boring, but Ella sounds a whole ton better.

I agree. I really don't like Ellen at all, it sounds old and I also relate it to Ellen DeGeneres (not really a bad thing but I can't get past it). Ella, on the other hand, I find to be very classy and beautiful. But, I'm sure it'll be like Linda and Susan in 30 years (i.e. very dated). I don't think Ellen will come back, but then again, you never know.
Personally, I find that Ellen is old now. The youngest Ellens I know are 13, and a Russian 3/4 year old, Elen. Ella is slowly going out of style, but is fine now. The youngest "Ella" I know is named Annabelle, and she is 3, we call her Ella. However, it WILL go out of style within 30 years or so.
