It's not outdated at all--it sounds quite modern to me. I don't really like
Malia (which looks like Molly-uh to me) or
Maleah (which looks possessive in the vein of horrors like MyAngel to me). I would spell it Maliya, myself; that spelling makes the most sense to my eyes.
Mali or Leah/Lia/Liya/Lea would both be fine nicknames, but the name works quite well standing alone. I know a girl named Malia--she's two years ahead of me in college, IIRC--and she wears her name very well without a nickname. :)
It's not a name that appeals to me, but it is respectable enough.
