[Opinions] Re: Kingston
in reply to a message by Fink
I don't like it. I don't really like Gwen Stefani, either, because of the awful quality of her music, particularly in the last few years. Ugh. It makes my skin crawl to see what starts as a mediocre ska band crank out garbage like the Bananas song. Anyway, little rant over. I thought I'd mention it because it probably influences the way that I look at her naming choices.
I don't mind -ston or -ton names as a principle, or place names when they meet my personal criteria for using a place name, but the potential for this name to have the nickname "King" turns me off. I'm not big on names that sound like regal titles, I guess.

It’s all the same. What the hell good to you
is your native land after you’re dead? Whose
native land is it after you’re dead?

Yea, I didn't care much for the solo stuff she did. I did like the first No Doubt album. And I used to really admire her voice on the songs she did with Sublime.
In general Kingston just sounds too surnamey to me. And I agree, King is a weird title/name for a kid.
Not the worst celebrity name ever, but I'm not celebrating it either.

Yep.
He was a screenwriter and novelist and one of the "Hollywood Ten." Ironically considering it was an anti-war novel, he stopped JGHS from being published until WWII was over (something like that; I forget the details) because of fearing conveying some sort of anti-Allied sentiment.

It's definitely less usual and it has a cool feel to it. I'm kind of tickled to learn that you used it. :-)

Well..i kept my feelings aside...i feel the same about her music...i dont know her personally, so i cant comment on her, per se...
but i like the name Kingston and its roots as a place name...which is a little ironic seeing that i dont like place names or "royal" names :)
