Does anyone know the origins of the English name Tocknell? It has been in use in Gloucestershire since at least the seventeenth century (there are tombstones in Painswick parish church which bear this name, spelt Tocknel) and there were merchants of the name in Bristol in the eighteenth century. There are now Tocknells in many parts of the world but the name remains relatively rare, with most English Tocknells still living in the South-West of England.
