Lola is, in itself, a lovely name; however, it has earned a bad rep because of the book Lolita and all of the, as Kristen puts it, "strippers and transexuals" who have since chosen to name themselves after the aforementioned piece of literature. Fortunately for you, though, that particular book isn't nearly as widely read as it used to be and the name is falling into the anals of history . . . by the time you have children, you may be able to reclaim it as the lovely name it has the possibility of being.

Lola is fine if your a stripper or transexual.

Lola is such a cute name that has been ruined by songs and by literature! It is short for "Lolita"...and if you haven't read the novel by Nabakov, Lolita (Delores) isn't a character I'd name my daughter after.

The name is okay, not really my style or anything I'd use, but not bad either. As for who it reminds me of, no one in particular, other than a bunch of celebrity babies.Lola Grace

It doesn't mean "Mary of Sorrows", it just means "sorrows" (as a pet form of Dolores).I don't like Lola, partly because there's a couple of slightly unsavoury songs with 'Lola' as the title character.

Never thought of it like that....The Sorrows part that is.

It's not because it's a pet form. Dolores itself just means "sorrows". If you read the database entry carefully you will see that that's what it says - the Mary part is in the saying, not in the word 'dolores'.
