[Opinions] alternative prn. of Lachlan??
In the "Aussie" post yesterday Elinor expressed frustration at the incorrect prn. of Lachlan... I always thought it was prn. Lock-linn. How else would it be prn? Forgive me, I'm just a silly American. ;)Britney Tamber

I believe that Elinor was complaining about the hard -ck- sound in the middle, it's more softer I think, in Scotland it's pronounced more like a German -ch-, more like -kh-, like the word 'loch' is not LOCK but more LOKH.So Lachlan would be more LOKH-lun than LOCK-lin.(I was told this by a Scottish friend at university after pronouncing 'loch' as 'lock'. It's proving difficult to get my English tongue around it :) )

I didn't see Elinor's post. But before I was informed as to how the name is pronounced in Australia, my guess was that it was "LACK-lan", with the first syllable pronounced to rhyme with Jack. I think that would be the guess of a lot of people who were unfamiliar with the name. Of course a few might even opt for "LATCH-lan" when they first saw it.

I pronounce it Lock-lin. Is that wrong? I can't think of another way to say it.Kristen~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
