WDYT of Orchid as a girls name? It's a guilty pleasure of mine, and I'm wondering if it could actually work as a name : )

Do you know as soon as I saw this that I thought it looked your style? (Then I noticed you posted it.) I'm not going to say that I love it, but I certainly like it.
It has something about it that says it could easily become a guilty pleasure of mine too.
It has fabulous chcracter potentional, so I could see it working for a real little girl, but I'd probably balance it with a reasonably common middle name. Also, a little cheesy, but it goes with Willow.

It reminds me of Orca (as in the whale) and I agree with mirfak that orchids often look like genitalia.

As others have mentioned, there's a bit of a connection between orchids and genitalia/reproductive organs, so it's not a good idea for a name, imo. :-/ I'm all for flower names, myself, but this one probably wouldn't work very well. Part of this is because I'm a nurse, though, and in medical terminology orchid = testicle, literally. Just one example: http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic2707.htm

I really dislike this, not sure why it just doesn't sound like a name.

Testicality aside, it sounds kind of dorky to me. Reminds me of Orkin pest control, and of a tacky erotic film called Wild Orchid ... sorry. Your mileage may vary. But some Orchids really do look a lot like human genitalia, and that alone is too much for me - if roses looked like that, I think I'd dislike the name Rose. A lot. Woah.By the way, orchid in medical terms refers to gonads in general, including ovaries* (I guess the ancient Greeks might not have understood ovaries). So if I were named Orchid, that'd be one part of my arsenal of ways to shut up junior high school smartasses. Some orchid genera that might make names =D
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Orchidaceae_generaOrchida or Orchia (stress on second syllable eee) might be nicer, IMO. The latter is an orchid genus.* (edit) I said this because I know more than one veterinarian who refers to a spay as an orchi(d)ectomy. I suppose it could be idiosyncratic and few other doctors anywhere say it, because there's another technical term for the spay while the castration is technically the orchiectomy.- mirfak

I really like it, too. It's so pretty, and the flowers are so pretty! My only problem is that I've seen the movie Adaptation way too many times, and in the movie they explain that the word Orchid comes from the Greek word for testicle. So I'm like, "It's so pretty... but if I ever used it, I wouldn't blame my daughter for murdering me in my sleep upon finding out what it means." On the other hand, how many people will ever know what it means?

Someone will surely tell a girl named Orchid what the original Greek derivation of her name was some day. Any parents who do name a daughter this should tell her themselves what it means as soon as she's old enough to understand what a testicle is. This is the sort of information that will be easier to take, and to forgive, if the parents are the ones who first impart it, rather than some nasty junior high school smartass.

Hmm.. I think it sounds ok, but it sorta has a harsh sound to it. But I think it could work because I think any flower name could work!~*~*~ BeX ~*~*~

Orchid means "testicle," so it's nothing I'd use, personally.

It's interesting. I think I like it, but it would be better as a middle name.

I think it's very pretty. I would never use it on my child, but I'd like it if someone else used it on their child.**~**~**~**~**~**~**

I like it. I have a thing for eccentric flower names :-)

It'd be brilliant as a middle name. Belle Orchid appeals to me for some reason. :)As a first name, I'm not sure. I think it could work--it's not that bad sounding--but it's not one I'd go with, myself.Array
