[Opinions] Elphinstone
WDYT of Elphinstone? It's generally a surname, but I've recently seen it as a first name of an author as well.Boy or girl? Too much for a first name?

Maybe as a MN, it'd say boy.

It sounds like the name of a male character in an online role playing game, or the internet persona of a pretentious high schooler. I'd venture to guess the author's first name was not really Elphinstone, but a pen name. In any case, totally laughable on a person.

Would this author be Elphinstone Dayrell? If so, he was born in 1869 and died in 1917, and the books he wrote all seem to be about Nigerian folktales. It was more common for men to have unusual surnames as given names back then. I think today it would be a little much, unless you were related to Mr. Dayrell himself.

I'd have to say that a surname like that should only be used on people with it as a family name. Plus, I believe it'd be best as a middle name, tho calling the child by it might be okay IMO.

It's... interesting. Seems like a combo of Alvin "elf friend" and stone. Is it pronouced EL-fin-ston or el-FIN-stu-nee? Probably a name for a girl. Nickname Elle?
