I'm not a goddess-worshipper, but I like the idea of my daughter's name reminding her of the divinity residing within her.
I agree, although the association with God is less "strong" since it's more common.
More blasphemous names :P

Miss Claire,
You shouldn't use judgemental words like "blasphematory" in a forum like this. There are plenty of people in the world who either don't believe in deities or who believe in deities quite different from yours. :-)

Yes?
Well I have the right to state my opinion. When you ask people a question you can't always have just a neutral answer like in a dictionary...

Yes, but this isn't an opinion board, this is a facts board, as you know perfectly well. It is also the 'public face' of BtN and it is appropriate to be more professional on this board than on the opinion board, which means keeping negative comments about name meanings, especially when based on our private religious beliefs, to ourselves.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm lecturing but I found your original post slightly offensive and I wanted to make you aware of the fact that such opinion-sharing has a time and a place, and this isn't it.

Well, this isn't my opinion. I'm sorry to say that you're lecturing (because you are) with no result.
My post wasn't offensive, just realistic. Most people would agree with what I said in the post, so it was better to say it here on the web than having someone saying the same thing irl. *That* would be offensive.
Moreover I would have felt bad for not saying that it could be awkward for the child, after all *she* will have to live and be jugded on her parents' choice. It would be unfair for her.

I would have to side with Chrisell on this one and say that it appeared to me that you were giving a judgement on the name, which would be entirely personal and entirely opinion.
I'd have to side with Chrisell too. Sorry Claire.

No problem, I don't care about being the majority or not :)
"Most people would agree with what I said in the post"
I'm sorry, but I disagree, I stand by what I said. I realise that religion dictates your life, but it does not dictate most peoples' lives to the extent that they will persecute a child for the meaning of her name - at least in Western society where this child's parents no doubt live.
Additionally: You said "My post wasn't offensive". I just told you that it was offensive, because I was offended by it.

Persecuting? Wow... O_o
No, they'll just make little comments or even just think bad of the family. It's enough to make it hard for the child. Probably not more difficult than a Gertrude-Bertha Scolastica or La-lysha Haelyy but if he had talked about these names it would have been ok to criticize. But Thea is cool, it shows an "open spirit", right? LOL
I understand that you were offended by my post, but I just read it again and it wasn't offensive at all.
Look at this post and these answers. This is what I call offensive: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=71330&board=gen
Run and go lecture them! (I'm sure you won't, since they're not criticizing the kind of name you can't criticise).
Incredible...

I would have to agree with Miss Claire.
Maybe the opinion board would have been a better place to say that, but it's not that big of a deal. Calm down people! :) It's really not worth arguing over.

Thank you.
Of course the opinion board would have been better, but since I had no occasion of saying it there I had to say it here. :)

I advise against using the word "blasphematory" simply because I think "blasphemous" is a much better choice! ;)
Perhaps a blasphematory is where one goes to blaspheme? Or would that be a blasphematorium?
Just kidding!

Thank you for this contribution! I sure had a good laugh. I think, with some good sense of humor even touchy topics like religion could be easily dealt with … If it had been me who was corrected in this way (English being my second language), I wouldn't have laughed less.

I'm glad I gave a laugh. I assumed it was a typo, rather than from ignorance, so no insult was intended.
We're all from all over the place and coming from many languages.
I'm a beginning student of Hebrew, and Miss Claire has set me straight on a few things in that area, which I do appreciate.
