I have a problem and was wondering if you all could help me.
I love the name Julian for a boy, it IS a boys name. I think it is masculine and i like it for its sound and that it is after a saint.
But everyone I come across hints or flat out says it sounds like a girls name.
Do you think this name is feminine?
How do you picture a boy with this name? A man?
And what is best?

I LOVE the name Julian. I don't know why people see it as feminine, but I agree that many people do. Maybe because it's so close to all the feminine Juli- names: Julie, Julia, Juliana, Julianne, etc. But don't let close-mindedness dissuade (sp?) you from a great name.
I like all your combos, but rank them:

Also, would Jude be an acceptable nn for Julian? I know the Beatles' song "Hey Jude" is after John Lennon's son, Julian, but I didn't know if that was an accepted nn or not. I love both names. :)

I like Julian Thomas is the best, I love it!
Since when is Julian a girls name? Its all boy to me, I love that name, on a boy. Who would use it on a girl?
(This coming from the person who love Micah on a girl, but everyone disagrees with...so do what you want, they dont have to like it, you and your SO do.)

It is a unisex name and always has been, since medieval times*. I prefer it on a girl, but that's just a matter of aesthetic preference.

I think it is great, and not feminine at all! By the way, looking at the popularities in the U.S., this name has only been in the boy's category, and it is currently rising as such. So I think a boy named Julian shouldn't have any problems.

I love the name Julian! It's in my top 20.
It does have a soft sound to it but I don't think that makes it "girly". And so what if it sounds similar to some female names (Julia, Juliana, Julianne, etc...)? That doesn't make it any less usable in my opinion.
I like Julian Alexander the best too. I also like Julian Thomas.

I'm sorry I picture a gay, dorky man who thinks he knows everything but doesn't as I know a Julian and he is like that. I also have a friend named Julie so it seems very feminine to me.
I would go with Julian Thomas from your list but Thomas Julian sounds better, use Julian as a middle name if you must.

It's totally a male name.
However, a very few silly folks seem to have been using it on girls lately, along with a lot of other male names. It's a small fad. Maybe they're confused and think it's Julianne. There's a young female competitive ice skater named Julian Burns I have heard of.
Not that that should keep you from using it as a boy name. Personally I love it for a guy, I think it's very, very masculine; and I think it'd be very suitable as a normal male name, especially with possible friendly nickname Jules. I think Julian will always be primarily a male name; I really doubt you'd have to worry about it being taken over by girls.
It reminds me most of Julian Cope, a tall-dark-eccentric-stranger-poet type (he's a somewhat lesser known pop musician who I think started out in the eighties).
I prefer Julian Thomas, it sounds the best-balanced to me.

I'll probably never use it as a fn because my first daughter *will* be named Jean, and I don't want any of my kids having the same first initial as each other. But it's a strong contender for a mn (Daniel Julian is my favourite combo). Frankly, if people are saying it's a girl's name, you're asking the wrong people! They're probably the popular-trendy sort hooked on the growing popularity of Julia / Julianna / Juliana etc.
Although it *can* be feminine it's a boy's name to me. Use it if you like it - they'll get used to it!
