[Facts] Russian/Belorussian Girl's name: a search
Hi, I am new to your board but would be v v grateful for help. I am a writer, searching for a name for a female Russian or Belorussian character, born in 1962, from a fairly educated family - she is going to be a scientist.I was thinking of going for Elizaveta (Veta for short). Does this work? Would the name have been popular enough at that time? My name (in certain parts of the world) makes me sound like I'm 103!Thanks

I think it works. Elizaveta was always fairly popular. But the short version should be Liza, not Veta. I've never heard of Veta at all.
Hope this helps!

Veta is usable too, I know a couple of ladies who's name is Elizaveta and they like the nn Veta instead of Liza (maybe because Liza is veeery popular)

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. But then you're from Ukraine and nicknames are a bit different there, aren't they? I know for a fact that Ukrainians tend to use Vita rather than Vika as a nickname for Viktoria.

well yes, our NNs differ from American for example, but Belorussia, Russia and Ukraine use the same names and NNs so Veta works for Belorussian lady too.As for Vika/Vita, i'd say that all Viktorias that I know go by NN Vika.. Vita is less popular and I knew only one Vita (i was 5 at that time :)) And I'm not sure if she was Viktoria or Vitalina.
And I like Vika much more than Vita, maybe because "Vita" resembles of the masculine name Vitaliy..

Thanks for your advice. Maybe I will go for Emiliya ... that sounds good. I chose this board because I noticed there were some genuine Eastern Europeans on here to ask!

Not really...The poster is asking about the popularity of a certain name in a certain period of time. That sort of factual question belongs here.

Sorry if I've posted this badly. I can only plead ignorance.
