[Opinions] Winnie (and more)
First - I was talking to my boyfriend, and I thought of Winnie (his ln is Winkowski, and I was goofing around), but the more I think of it, the more I like it for a girl. I was wondering if it would be *weird* to nn a child through your last name (I know kids, especially boys do this in school, but I mean as a family/parent). For instant, I know a guy with the ln Osbourn, but he always goes by Oz or Ozzy. His family didnt give him that nn though, so would it be weird for us to give her the nn? I really dont like Winifred and cant think of any other first name it could be a nn for. Also, here are some combos. Even though the fn's are common and popular, I will explain that no nn is to be used - that is until I hear from him he wants to be called by a nn insteand. How many *insert common name here* go by their full name, and not a common nn?The MN are more spunky to give the combo some flavor and not keep it so plain. I took the names directly off my list of approved FN and MN, so hubby at least likes them enough not to cross them off. Mix and Match if you want (but please keep FN as FNs and MN as MNs)Benjamin Ezra (Benji if anythin)
Daniel Ambrose
Elijah Xavier (MAYBE Eli)
Jason Donovan
Miles Octavian (one hubby and I have talked about, intails are MOW, so we thought nn Mo would be cute)
Thomas Nikolai
William Emmett (Another he already approved of)
Zachary Logan

I think of Winnie the Pooh straight away, and can't really get past that unfortunately. Nicknames can come from anywhere you like though, I'm a girl and go by a nn from my surname, so I don't think there's anything wrong with it in principle.Benjamin Ezra - Nice combo, though Ezra is still a little odd to me as I haven't heard it on a real person yet. How about Benjamin Ambrose?
Daniel Ambrose - Like it a lot.
Elijah Xavier - Not too keen on Xavier, what about Donovan instead? Elijah Donovan sounds fabulous imo.
Jason Donovan - Jason doesn't really appeal to me, but Donovan is lovely.
Miles Octavian - I like Miles, but Octavian just makes me think of octaves in music, it sounds very un-namelike.
Thomas Nikolai - Very nice.
William Emmett - Too many Ms, and Emmett is too surnamey for my tastes.
Zachary Logan - I prefer Zacharias to Zachary BTW, how is the surname pronounced?

Thanks for your added suggestions. You're the first one to do this.I love Benjamin Ambrose and Elijah Donovan. Benjamin Ambrose is a little long with our surname though, but I do love it. (And as for Ezra, with very popular and sometimes plain fn, I am trying for a spunky mn to spice it up a little, as thats how I love my popular fn combos.)

I don't see the problem if you choose to give your child a nn based on a surname.Benjamin Ezra (Benji if anythin) - nice. I don't care for Benji though. It reminds me of the dog. I only know of one Benjamin who doesn't go by Ben.
Daniel Ambrose - Both names are nms but I think they make a nice combo. I can't think of any Daniels who go by Daniel.
Elijah Xavier (MAYBE Eli) - I think both names are nice but I'm not sure about the combo's flow. I know two Elijahs and both go by Elijah not Eli.
Jason Donovan - the endings are too similar for my taste. All the Jasons I know go by Jason except for occasionally being called Jay, but I don't know any Jasons under 25 either.
Miles Octavian (one hubby and I have talked about, intails are MOW, so we thought nn Mo would be cute) - It's a decent combo although I dislike Miles and nn Mo.
Thomas Nikolai - I like it. Nikolai is nms but in this combo I'm really liking it. I only know one Thomas who goes by THomas.
William Emmett (Another he already approved of) - I like both names but not together. I know a couple Williams who go by William. The vast majority are Bill.
Zachary Logan - It's a nice enough combo but it does nothing for me. I don't know any Zacharys who are actually called Zachary.

Hi,
I love Winnie - we are considering Winifred nn Winnie for baby no 4 due in the summer.
I think it would work as a nn from a surname or short for Gwendolyn which i love and was also on ourlist.from the boys i likeElijah Xavier but think full name Eli sould better with Xavier.
William Emmett
Zachary (but not Logan)

I find that lots of high school boys go by their last name (eg. Smith "Smitty") but it's less common among younger children. I'd say play it by ear, if you end up with a child that likes the nn Winnie then itt's all great!Of your combos I like..Benjamin Ezra
Miles Octavian
William EmmettAnd I'd also like to point out that Jason Donovan is an actor's name. Just so you know :)--Addy

My friend's sister named her daughter Winter and calls her Winnie as a nn. I think Winnie is a cute name. It also makes me think of the cute little bear Winnie the Pooh which is adorable for a little girl :)

I think nn's can be anything you want. Winnie would be fine. And Mo. Or any word/name that evolves in the relationship. Favs:
