How would you pronounce...
Alta?Do you say, AHL, as in alternate?
Or do you say AL, as in Alfie?

AL as in Alfie. This was the name of a distant cousin of my grandpa. She and her husband stole a bunch of stuff from my grandpa after he had a stroke and wasn't thinking quite right. Somehow I still like Alta though. Of course Alta was a distant cousin of mine too but I'm not claiming her.

It's only used by Afrikaans speakers where I live, and so it's always AHLtah.

Hi !!! Alta? It means "high, tall" in Italian!I pronounce it with an AH sound I suppose even if the the Italian "a" is in a middle step between AH and A.This name surprised me but I can't see it used here, it is a too common word. I much prefer Altea (Althea).
