glaphrey a female first name
We have an ancester Glaphrey Smith who was living in Washington county Arkansas in 1850. She was a widow who had lived in Illinois and Tennessee. We think her husband Jacob had died about 1845. Dutch origin? We have found name used only 2 or 3 other times. Any ideas how to find origin of name? Thanks. Francis

My guess is that this was originally a pet form of Glaphyra, a name used in Greek speaking areas of the Roman empire, and the name of a saint:http://www.catholic-forum.com/saintS/saintg69.htmas well as a princess of Cappadocia who married a son of King Herod of Judaea:http://www.interhack.net/projects/library/wars-jews/b2c7.htmlAccording to Santi e Fanti by Enzo La Stella T., Glaphyra may possibly go back to a Greek word meaning "elegant."
