[Opinions] Gillard = Julia
in reply to a message by Esyllt
Julia Gillard is the current Australian Prime Minister and I dare say that she would be the foremost association with 'Gillard' in many minds. I can't get behind it as a first name at all.
One would presume that parents of a baby girl 'Gillard' would at least Google the name before deciding upon it. It would be a bit funny if they were against her policies.

I see what you mean! But do all parents who name their babies Reagan, say, vote Republican, or do they just like the sound of the name? Same with Kennedy. In some cases, this kind of naming is probably a political statement, as Christine or Mohammad can be religious statements, but it could equally just be that seeing a name over and over again makes people get used to it and like it.
In this case, the message could be: I want my daughter to be a strong woman rather than: I want my daughter to vote for Ms Gillard's party as I do!

Pretty sure that naming a child Reagan when Reagan was in office and not being a fan of his policies would be odd.
If you name your child Gillard whilst she is the PM people will presume you support her whether you do or not. Thus if you don't support her, it's probably not the best choice of name, as it is such a strong association.
