I once saw an American family with a son named Magnus in a magazine article. It seemed fine to me. Where I live, Magnus would be usable. Unusual and foreign names aren't a big deal here. I guess it depends on where you live and the people you interact with. It will stand out more if everyone you know is named James, Elizabeth, Anna, etc. and they aren't very accepting of names that diverge from the norm, but I don't see that as a bad thing. Magnus isn't so weird that the average person would be appalled by it.
