It's one of my favorites. My husband does not like it, he says it sounds like something from a fantasy book. Except he loves fantasy books and I don't so I'm totally baffled.
I think the Mord- might scare some people off of it, possibly keeping it from getting too trendy? There was a
Johnny Depp movie Mortdecai a few years ago, and on Cartoon Network, "Regular Show" features main characters named
Mordecai and
Rigby. So it's coming to the public eye, to an extent.
Mordechai seems to be getting more usage (with the gutteral ch/silent c). I assume that's primarily Jewish parents. But that one is a lot more likely to make the top 1000 than
Mordecai. (
Mordecai has about ~50-55 boys born per year,
Mordechai gets like ~150-200)
