Over the past few years of high school, he had dated girls and loved it, but the moment shy little Lucan approached him to ask for directions, Spencer forgot all those he dated. He hated the idea for awhile that he could have the same feelings for Lucan as he did for his ex-girlfriends. He never opposed the idea-- one of his best friends, Lila, had a girlfriend-- but he never thought he might fit in that category. Besides, he had no idea if Lucan did either. After discussing the situation with Lila, Spencer felt more reassured. Their school was pretty open minded, so that wouldn't raise more issues. Lila told Spencer, "Dude, maybe you like both guys and girls. Nothing wrong with that. My girlfriend does." That made Spencer feel even more at ease. Maybe there wasn't something wrong with him. Maybe he really did love his exes while also having feelings for Lucan. Spencer and Lucan spent most of their lunches together. Though very different in background and even in some of their interests, one thing brought them together: an appreciation for the arts. Spencer, more of a logical, mathematical minded man, tended towards photography or music, while Lucan embraced all art forms with wide open arms. Over the course of their senior year, Lucan helped Spencer dive deeper into his love of the arts, thus bringing the two boys closer in their friendship. As prom drew closer, Spencer decided to go for it: he would ask Lucan to go with him. He didn't plan anythjng big, not wanting to draw unwanted attention. He planned to ask Lucan before school one day, just casually, framing it in a way that could be mistaken for a friend asking to go with a friend as nothing more in case Lucan wasn't that open minded and didn't want to go with Spencer as an actual date. Spencer took the whole morning to prep and gather every ounce of courage he had.Unfortunately, the moment he set eyes on Lucan, that courage drained from his body, leaving Spencer paler than he already was. Lucan wouldn't be going with him to prom, not as a friend and certainly not as a date, for there in front of Spencer's eyes stood Lucan, locking lips with one of the most popular guys in school, Stellan Bellamy. Spencer quietly dismissed himself into the school. He said very little to Lucan at lunch and though they stayed friends, the two began to drift as Lucan spent more and more of his time with Stellan. When high school ended, Lucan went off to college on the other side of the country, taking his boyfriend along for the ride. Spencer stayed nearby, attending a state university only a few minutes from home. While there, he met a girl, Mallory Yorves, and fell in love. He tried to forget Lucan, ignoring any of the guys on campus who caught his eye. Instead, he kept his relationship with Mallory going, even when he didn't really want to, just as a distraction and a means to forget the guy he thought he loved. Spencer and Mallory ended up getting married and having a son. However, shortly after Greydon's birth, Mallory started distancing herself from Spencer. When he asked her why, she confronted him about Lucan. "I haven't spoken to him sknce high school, Mal." But she insisted that other people were talking about how Spencer was conducting a gay affair behind her back. She grew hysterical and told him she didn't want to be married to a gay man. "I'm not just attracted to guys, though!" Spencer told her, having come to terms with the idea over the years. "Babe, you're gorgeous and you're the only one for me."But Mallory refused to listen. "I want a divorce and I want my son." Mallory ended up getting custody of Greydon, Spencer receiving visitation rights on the weekends. Meanwhile, Lucan and Stellan kept their relationship going, even after Lucan graduated college and began his career as a professional stage manager, initially working long hours as an intern before finally garnering his own fulltime position. Due to Lucan's busy schedule, he and Stellan saw very little of each other. To try and fix the situation, Lucan suggested they adopt. When even their own little girls couldn't remedy the situation, Stellan founds other means. One evening, Lucan came home early from work, his boss telling him to take a break and spend some time with his family. Much to his surprise, when Lucan opened the bedroom door to change, he stumbled upon his longtime boyfriend in bed with another man. Lucan closed the door, gathered Lavender and Gemma, and helped them each pack a bag before ushering them out the door. He didn't turn back. He didn't say anything to Stellan. He didn't even let Stellan know he saw. He just left. Lucan needed to get himself out of there and he refused to let another man raise the children he wanted. With nowhere else to go, Lucan and his daughters moved back into his parents' home, back in the city he graduated high school, a couple hours drive away. Though his parents had never fully approved of Lucan's lifestyle, they refused to let their only child love on the streets with the children he so clearly loved. They set up Lucan's old room for the girls and let their son sleep in the guest room until he could get back on his feet. One day while Lucan went to a job interview at a nearby arts center, Spencer arrived at the same location. Ever since divorcing Mallory, he dove into his high school interest in the arts and had started teaching music at the center. Lucan's job interview went well, ending with a tour of the location. The tour guide led Lucan into one of the music classrooms, introducing him to the teacher at the front of the room. "This is Mr.--""Spencer Dega. I went to high school with him," Lucan finished with a smile. He gave Spencer a wave. "Good to see you again, Spence." The tour continued, Lucan tossing Spencer an inviting smile. The minute his class ended, Spencer dashed out the door to see if he could catch Lucan. "Looking for someone?" Spencer turned to the voice, finding Lucan standing right next to his classroom door. "It's been so long, Spence. How are you?" The question turned into coffee. Coffee turned into a renewed friendship. A renewed friendship turned into courage. Spencer asked Lucan out, finally, after almost ten years of wanting nothing but. Lucan said yes and their relationship spiraled from there. Within a few months of starting their relationship, Lucan proposed. A few months later, they became the Montague-Degas. Their relationship in a strong place, they recently adopted their first child together, Finnick Dorsey Montague-Dega, the first of hopefully many.
