I think
Van is alright, but because it's part of surnames, it is kind of awkward.
I dislike
Vance. It sounds smug, brandnamey, aggressive. Smacks of the word "advance"
I can picture a weightlifting gym named
Vance Fitness with a parking lot full of pickups and Hummers, more easily than I can picture a little boy named
Vance.
My favorite masculine V names:
Vincent,
Victor,
Vaughn (which slightly suffers from the same issue as
Van, because it sounds just like Von in my accent),
Valentine,
Virgil.
