I believe that Elinor was complaining about the hard -ck- sound in the middle, it's more softer I think, in Scotland it's pronounced more like a German -ch-, more like -kh-, like the word 'loch' is not LOCK but more LOKH.
So Lachlan would be more LOKH-lun than LOCK-lin.
(I was told this by a Scottish friend at university after pronouncing 'loch' as 'lock'. It's proving difficult to get my English tongue around it :) )
