. . . think of both falcons and Pippin, in that order, as soon as I saw the name. It's a lovely name, but it could definitely have associations that are too strong and heavy right at the moment. It might be better as a middle name.

yes, don't forget...
While the hype from the films will probably have died down by then, there'll still be all the die-hard fans of the books who'll instantly associate Peregrine with Pippin. (Just tested this on my boyfriend- a complete LOTR obsessive- who said Peregrine Took instantly comes to mind when he hears 'Pippin').
That aside, I do like the name Peregrine

I'm not a "Lord of the Rings" fan, so for me the association is falcon, but that's not a bad thing, it's a strong masculine image.
