Help[Opinions] Emma and Emily
Do you like the names Emma and Emily? I mean, yeah, they are common but if you just don't consider their popularity, do you like the sound of the names alone? Just wondering because I always thought Emma was extremely unattractive and I never understood why everybody loved it so much. It always made me think of a chubby farmer's daughter with pigtails and chocolate smeared all over he face. I should love it, it's rich in history and has so many literary connections but I just can't. I do like Emily a lot better, I even think it's sweet and I' consider it for a pet, I had a dream in which I had a cockatiel named Emily. Sometimes I think Emma just got popular because people wanted a more unusual alternative to Emily without really loving the sound that much. Just wondering.
I do however LOVE Emmeline (pr. EM-meh-line). I also don't mind Emerald and I think Emerson is kind of appealing though I would never ever use it. I also like Emme, at least when it's pronounced like the letter M. It is quite elegant and I like how it reads the same backwards, just like Aviva, one of my favourites. Which other Em-names do you like?
How many Emmas and Emilys do you actually know and how old are they? Middle names? and how many people with other Em-names do you know? Do many of them go by Emmy?

Love Emma, dislike Emily
I have always disliked the name Emily. I think it is horribly clunky and it reminds me of the image you were saying for Emma. I don't get how anyone could like this name really. It sounds very infantile and kind of "hick-ish". Maybe it's the -ee sound at the end. I can't stand names that end in -ee, except maybe Lucy.
Emma however I find just adorable. I don't get why everyone doesn't love it. I think it sounds soft and enchanting. Like a little fairy princess name. When I hear the name, I think of some fine refined lady. If it wasn't so popular I would love to use this name. I even had a dream that I had a baby named this. My only worry about it besides the popularity is that people would try to call her Emily.
I don't like Emmeline, Emme, Emerson, or Emerald. I guess I like Imogen (em-uh-jen)with the nickname Emma, Emilia, and Emmanuella. I've known about 12 or 13 Emily's, but never met an Emma. And I work at a daycare/elementary school. I love Ella too, and I've only known one.

I prefer Emily to Emma and Emerald to all the others. Emmerson I think of more as a boys' name, but wouldn't use it on either.
I've met Emmas and Emilys of varied ages, but an increasing number that I meet or hear about are younger. It's actually probably one of my favorite names. I don't think I would use it because of the popularity.

I have never liked either Emma or Emily and I never will. Your description of Emma made me laugh because it's just about spot-on with how I picture it. I know an Emma who's about my age, she is obese and dull-witted and has a huge Lemmy (guy fromt he metal band Motorhead, look him up and see his face) type mole on her face. Ugh.
I also know a couple of younger Emmas, one's about ten and is an adopted Chinese. I believe her middle name is Chinese but I don't remember it, if I ever knew it. Another Emma is about three? Her name is Emma Marie, which sounds like a terrible mumble. Even more so because her last name is also an m name.
I picture Emily as being this super-smart but miserable teenage girl who thinks she's superior to other people just because she reads Jane Austen and yes, Emily Dickinson for fun. I have known Emilys in their old age, middle age, my age and small girls.. I can't really think of any of there middle names though I do believe one was an Emily Ann.
Emma and Emily, they are charter members of the KKK: Kookie Kutter Kidz. You know, Mom has an account at Gymboree (very expensive, trendy kids' boutique) they have piano lessons and soccer lessons and dance lessons and their parents are worn to a frazzle driving them here there and everywhere... You get the picture.

Well my name is Emily...can't really complain!
Seriously though I have always been told that it is a lovely name and it was never popular when I was growing up. I am never called Emmy...I always hated that short form. Just Em. I think it's a great pick!

Emma -- Timeless classic that transports me back to Norman England. Does it get any better than that? Seriously, this one deserves to be a top ten name.
Emily -- Emma playful little sister. Sweet and loaded with her own literary and historic connections. Love it.
Emmeline -- Nostalgic and reminds me of Emmeline Pankhurst, the British suffragette. For that alone I love the name. But yes, that "-line" on the end makes it so precious, doesn't it?
Emerald -- Yay. Someone else besides me who even likes the name. I'm Irish so the Emerald Isle thing makes me smile. Plus, I'm born in May and live in Seattle, the Emerald City. The stars have aligned and I can't escape my attraction to the name Emerald.
Could I interest you in Emer / Eimear, "EE-mer?"
Emerson -- Too masculine for me, even if the literary connection sets off bells and whistles in this snobby brain of mine. The "-son" ending just turns me off.
I know an 11 year old Emily. I remember when her mother was expecting, we went to see the movie, "Emma" starring Gwyneth Paltrow. I suggested Emma instead of Emily. But her mind was made up. Emily suits her dd much better.
