I've always had a secret thing for Ginger as a name. I love the repeated soft "g" sounds and I love feminine names ending in "-r." Ginger Kate and Ginger Molly are my stock combos.
But I know it's not most people's taste. It has a ditzy / cheap association for many people that I find unfair. While it is a name in its own right, if it's used as a nn for Virginia then any Ginger could have options if she doesn't like her name.

I like Ginger, the name and the spice.
It's probably too great a stretch for you, but you mentioned Ginger as a nickname for Virginia and it occurred to me that most of the sounds are also present in Iphigenia (albeit in a different order). Last I knew, you still didn't have a nickname for Iphigenia you were thrilled with. I think Ginger could work. :)

This is a guilty pleasure name of mine, I just love it. I think of the spice Ginger, not necessarily red hair although I like that association too. It's so pretty and feminine. I would love to use it but probably never will because of it's stereotypes which I also find unfair and a shame.
There are two Gingers in my subdivision and they are far from "ditzy" or anything of the sort. They are upper middle class, educated women with children. I love the name!

I will admit that ditzy/cheap association makes me want to say no, it's not usable, but I've heard worse names. I personally wouldn't use it, but I won't flip out over other people doing so.
