The two origins of German Best are in Kohlheim & Kohlheim's Familiennamen and the relation to Sebastian is also at http://www.ancestry.ca/name-origin?surname=best.

Thanks! This only leaves two alternative toponymies, Besten or Beste, without clear meaning... Both are from places google cannot even acknowledge, even less give you their meaning.

You'll find the two places named Besten at tinyurl.com/p2w9ee9. There is no Beste in Germany.
