Re: Surname
in reply to a message by Frimml
Frimmlova is apparently just "daughter of Frimml", a Slavic patronymic borne by female members of the family. That's why it may appear to be two different surnames merging into one, the daughters would be Frimmlova, and the sons just Frimml. The name appears to be Austrian, hence it's spread east throughout the old Austro-Hungarian empire and the variant Frimml/Frimmlova. The root is not Fri-, but a grade of Fram- "forward", which has a wide range of derivatives, with meanings ranging from "righteous" "brave", "vigorous", "profitable". Fremmel is probably cognate, rather than a variant.

I can't believe it's taking me so long to see your reply! I thank you for your insights or research on my behalf! I knew the Frimml name was possibly German/ Austrian, however, I know that Rudolph Friml, who was a well know classical composer in the early through mid 20th century, was Czechoslovakian or at least with the disease from Prague! But when I looked up some death records in the United states, and the majority of them say Norway as their Origin. I'm not sure if there's a Town in Iowa named Norway, and that's what it was referencing, or the country? I do know that I have Norwegian ancestry but I thought that was from mine grandmother's side of the family but I'm not sure on that but anyway I think you for your help, much obliged!
