I am wondering about the surname "Strickland"

It is a variant of Stirkeland. This is simply stirk + land. Stirk today still means 'a young bullock or heifer, usually between 1 and 2 years old'. (OED)

It may have come from "strict land" or "stricken land" but it's only a guess.

Strickland: British. "Land for heifers," places in England. That's all it says :(

The Norwegians have a word 'stryk' which means rapids or fast flowing waters. Possibly, it's derived from an area near the rapids?
